What does America Need in the Midst of Sexual Scandals? By E. Calvin Beisner

If you’ve paid even the slightest attention to national news lately, you know that the careers of the rich, the famous, the powerful—politicians, entertainers, newscasters, and more—are crashing and burning amid revelations of sexual harassment and rape.

What a confirmation of the sobering Biblical warnings, “be sure your sin will find you out” (Numbers 32:23) and “Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap” (Galatians 6:7)!

The American colonies were founded in large part by devout Christians seeking freedom to worship God as they believed He required in His Word. They sought to weave Biblical morals into the warp and woof of life in the New World. God blessed their efforts with amazing success. America quickly became not only prosperous but also, more importantly, one of the freest, yet at the same time one of the best-ordered, societies in the world.

But recent generations have turned their backs on God and His laws. Rampant sexual infidelity of all sorts is just one of many ways, and it reveals even deeper rot: “covetousness, which is idolatry” (Colossians 3:5), because it grows out of discontent with one’s circumstances and, most important, with the God who providentially planned them.

Maybe, as millions of Americans watch the destruction of these people’s lives and reflect on their own failings, God will open their eyes to the need to honor and obey His laws—and to the astounding glad tidings that those who break His law are not without hope but can have their sins forgiven and be reconciled to God by faith in Jesus Christ—and be set free from slavery to sin!

What America needs more than anything else is revival—real revival, which involves repentance from sin and heartfelt faith in Christ.

I’ve been praying for that for many years. Four years ago I taught a course on the Ten Commandments for my church’s Sunday school that was so well received that one lady in it asked me to repeat it for a large group of women she was discipling, and their husbands. I watched joyfully as God changed many lives, including one lady’s husband who came to Christ through it, resulting in the restoration of their marriage.

Now the James Partnership, Cornwall Alliance’s parent organization, has produced that teaching series on video with an online study guide that will help users dive deeper into God’s law. Available on DVD and online, The Ten Commandments teaching series is a wonderful resource—perfectly designed for a semester (23 sessions) or quarter (13 sessions) of a church’s Sunday school program, private Christian schools, home schools, and personal use.

“As one whose life the Lord changed through Cal’s study on the Ten Commandments,” says Scott Hamilton, “I can wholeheartedly recommend it. As it did mine, it will enlarge your love for God, your thanks for Christ’s saving work on your behalf, and your joy in Spirit-empowered obedience to God’s wonderful law.”

Theologian Wayne Grudem calls it “fascinating, challenging, life-changing, reverent, and God-centered,” and Rev. Mike Milton, President of the D. James Kennedy Institute and professor of missions and evangelism at Erskine Theological Seminary, says it “strikes a Biblical, Christ-centered, and historically-orthodox balance in presenting God’s Law. Christian families and churches will be blessed by the teaching.”
